The Bernien Lab convened to wish our talented summer interns, Shuo and Ruiyang, a hearty goodbye over dinner at Glorious Bastards.
During his time in Innsbruck, Ruiyang worked on the first-generation dual-species experiment in BlueLab. In addition to setting up and characterizing an SLM and a passive diffractive optical element for converting Gaussian beams into top-hats, which he wrote up for his bachelor’s thesis, Ruiyang helped design and build the Rydberg beam paths, simulated optimal parameters for a robust interspecies gate, and most importantly, contributed a lot of enthusiasm and good vibes to our lab lunches.
Joining Purple Lab, the second-generation dual-species experiment, Shuo had the opportunity to dive deep into non-destructive readout of atoms. He successfully developed simulations after exploring the literature and finally built and successfully tested a first prototypical setup based upon these insights. More importantly, he coded a significant part of the AI-enabled rearrangement that we use to generate defect-free arrays. Just like Ruiyang, Shuo's departure means we'll be losing an enthusiastic and fun lab mate.
